Finding it
Hard to find, every time
14 of 40 posts say it is hard to find
This is the complaint that comes up most, and not only from first-timers. One visitor who has been many times says they still walk in circles around the compound on every visit. Another got lost for five minutes before spotting the entrance at the bottom of a slope.
Their tips line up with ours. Ask the guard at the gate to point the way. Look for a two-storey glass building with a small sign beside it, then take the slope down to the basement. If you are still lost, phone the bar. One visitor warns that from outside, with the glass box unlit, the place looks closed. It isn’t.
“Follow the map and you trust it a little less with every step.”

Most talked-about drink
The Shrimp Cocktail (虾调)
7 posts mention it, all of them positive
Visitors describe it as savoury and clean. Tomato gives it a soft, salty sourness, the wasabi adds fragrance more than heat, and the shrimp is faint but there in every sip. A bartender told one visitor it began as a take on the Bloody Mary, though that visitor found it far easier to like.
One person called it the best drink of their night, against a year of drinks made with onion, sour soup, sausage and curry. Another only wished for more wasabi. Nobody in our sample disliked it, which is a different picture from the one the bar gave us. The people who didn’t like it may simply not have posted.
“Savoury but not fishy, smooth as a Hollywood film.”

Signature drinks
The strange ones win
21 posts review signature drinks. 19 like what they had
The signature menu changes every season, and the drinks people write about most are the savoury, slightly odd ones. 赛螃蟹 (Mock Crab), named after an old Beijing dish of eggs cooked to taste like crab, is Shaoxing rice wine, vinegar and ginger, with a wooden spoon of fish roe to eat between sips. One visitor ordered a second straight away. Another came back the next night just for it.
Then there is the drink that tastes like a Beijing hot-pot dinner: Niulanshan baijiu washed with sesame paste, with fermented tofu, chilli oil and pickled garlic. Two visitors, independently, say it ends up tasting of chocolate.
Beyond those, opinions differ. 森之息 (Breath of the Forest), with grape, pine needle and bergamot, is the safe pick most people like. 山海 (Mountains and Sea), a tea-led drink, was one visitor’s highlight and another’s reason never to return. The dessert drinks, like a tiramisu take on the Ramos Gin Fizz, are rich. One tip worth knowing: the menu runs from light at the top to strong at the bottom.
“Liquid bar food.”

Classics
The reason regulars come
11 posts mention the classics. 9 are full of praise
Posts single out the dry Martini, the Sidecar, the Gimlet, a Horse’s Neck, and a Champs-Élysées that one visitor rated the best of the three they had ever had. Tell the bartender what you like and the drink is adjusted to suit, which is why several posts call this one of the safest places in Beijing to order a classic.
The one dissenting post came on a busy night, when the Martini, Aviation and Sidecar all fell short.
“Dry enough to take your breath away. Clean, too.”

Bartenders
Come after nine for Zoe
11 posts mention Zoe by name
Zoe usually arrives around 9pm, according to one regular, so come later if you want her to make your drink. Visitors write about watching her stir, playing the Book of Answers with her across the bar, and being praised when they guessed there was baijiu in a drink.
A long-time regular remembers her as an ice queen at first, then someone to chat with once they got to know each other. Another says she remembers faces after long gaps and makes sure nobody drinks so much they can’t get home. One first-timer found the bartenders aloof.

Service
Small rules worth knowing
3 posts complain about service
Everyone at the table is expected to order at least one drink. group-buy vouchers from Chinese review apps aren’t accepted. Some nights the bar sends out a small pine-flavoured shot on the house.
The complaints are about the floor rather than the bar: slow service on a busy night in a private room, and a bill paid by scanning a QR code before an itemised receipt was offered.

Food
Don’t skip it
4 posts write about the food
The boneless chicken feet noodles are oily and fragrant, a guilty pleasure if you skipped dinner. The four-sausage platter is recommended as made for drinking.
Less expected: a plate of vegetable sticks, which turns out to be cucumber, radish and celery with a dip. And one visitor got a packet of sunflower seeds to go with the sunflower-seed cocktail.

The room
Small, worn and warm
14 posts describe the room. 5 call it small or cramped
Posts agree the room is small and a little worn, and that it feels like home anyway. There is jazz on, and owls everywhere, because Zoe collects them. Opening the door, one visitor felt they had walked into a magic world.
One regular’s favourite part of the night comes after: a turn on the swings in the compound outside.

Seats and crowds
Go early, or on a weeknight
6 posts talk about getting a seat
One person phoned several times and was told there was no space, then finally got a bar seat on a weeknight. Arrive late and you may end up on the sofa rather than at the bar. Arrive early and you may have the room to yourself. A September 2026 visitor still found seats on a weekend.
Private rooms come with a minimum spend. Sit at the bar if you can, which is where the conversation is.

Price
About ¥110 a drink
4 posts quote prices, around ¥110 a drink on average
Signatures run from ¥95 to ¥130. One visitor spent ¥680 on six drinks. A commenter under another post put it in one word: expensive. For two people, our own usual round of four drinks and a few snacks comes to about ¥600.

Toilets
Better than they need to be
5 posts rate the toilets. 4 are impressed
Xiaohongshu reviewers take bar toilets seriously, and this one does well: separate for men and women, clean, with hair ties and mouthwash. One reviewer gave it only three out of five.

How people hear about it
The podcast crowd
6 posts came via a podcast. 25 of 40 posts are from October 2025 on
Six posts say they came because the bar was recommended on a podcast hosted by Li Dan, one of China’s best-known stand-up comedians and a man with a following for his easygoing, slightly philosophical view of life. The guest was a well-known bartender and video creator. All six posts are from autumn 2025 onwards, and that is when the number of posts jumps.
That is the rush described in the shrimp story above. Seen from the posts, most of the newcomers enjoyed themselves. Seen from behind the bar, it was more people than a small neighbourhood place could look after. Before that, posts read like regulars writing about their local, some of them having followed the group from its old bar on Haoyun Street.

Complaints
Not for everyone
1 negative post, 2 mixed
One visitor in February 2026 came because of the podcast and left angry. They found 山海 so sweet they sent it back, it was still charged at ¥120, and they called the decor ordinary.
Of the mixed posts, one loved the signatures but not the classics or the floor service that night. The other said the bar has character but isn’t stunning, and advised going without high expectations.
