Finding it
Just off Jinbao Street
7 posts describe the way in
Shifter sits by the south entrance of the Jinbao Place mall on Jinbao Street. Visitors describe walking past the luxury car showrooms and turning into a small lane. One calls it tucked away in a back street, but nobody in our sample got lost. Loma, which closed in autumn 2026, was across the way, and so is the dessert shop choc-a-lot. One visitor caught in a summer downpour was glad the taxi could stop right at the door.

Most talked-about drink
Perilla (紫苏), in three versions
20 posts mention it. 13 like it, 4 are lukewarm, 3 don’t
Perilla, the purple-leaved herb also sold as shiso, is the drink Shifter keeps coming back to. The plain version (紫苏) is pink, light and fizzy, with lemon, and one visitor notes the menu says it has survived six menu changes. 紫苏3号, the third version, adds young ginger and honey and comes with a small whisky gummy on top. One visitor calls it a perilla Penicillin. The perilla martini (紫苏马天尼) started as a thank-you drink for regulars at the seventh anniversary in August 2026 and joined the menu in October.
Fans say it tastes clearly of the herb, and one visitor ranked it first of four drinks. The ginger in No. 3 splits people. One visitor says if you like ginger you will love it, if not it buries the perilla. The plain version is so gentle that one visitor found no alcohol in it at all, and another said it tasted like laundry detergent. No. 3 is not listed on the autumn and winter 2026 menu, but the plain version and the martini are.
“Perilla lovers, go.”

Signature drinks
One ingredient, one name
59 posts review or name the house drinks
Almost every drink is named after a single ingredient, such as Tomato, Mung Bean, Pomelo or Pear No. 3, and much of the produce comes from a partner farm outside Beijing. Visitors keep coming back to the same handful. The tomato drinks come up in 14 posts and 12 like them. The original, made with a tomato variety called Red Free, tastes like fresh tomato purée with sparkling wine, is very low in alcohol and arrives with a small bowl of the farm’s cherry tomatoes. Tomato No. 2 is greener, with tea and a little nori.
Mung Bean (13 posts, 12 positive) reminds people of a mung bean ice lolly, with dried tangerine peel and pandan. Pomelo (11 posts, 9 positive) is tart, with the bitterness of the peel. The lychee martini comes up in nine posts and every one says it is strong. One rates it at 32%. Over the summer a watermelon series drew 11 reviews, mostly happy. These were Shifter’s best sellers of spring and summer 2026, the bar says, but Pomelo, Mung Bean and Lychee are not on the autumn and winter menu that began on 8 October 2026. Of the newer drinks, Strawberry (shochu, wine, chocolate and roasted tea) has five reviews and all of them are glowing.
Most drinks are light, fruity and not syrupy, and most people like them that way. Five visitors found drinks thin or short on alcohol, and five found one too sweet. Eight point out at least one drink that is properly strong.
“Light overall, and careful with both the food and the drinks.”

Classics
Gin on Tuesdays, twists from October
13 posts. 10 mention Tuesday gin night
Every Tuesday is gin night. The menu turns to gin drinks and the snack list gets shorter. Fans love the choice, pages of gins by the glass, and one visitor sitting by the gin shelf was poured two shots of a gin the bar made itself. In October 2026 three gins of your choice cost ¥199. Not everyone is won over. In July one visitor paid ¥120 for a gin highball that tasted like soda water and gin, and in September a group left because one friend does not drink gin.
The autumn and winter 2026 menu adds a section of eight reworked classics, among them a Grasshopper (the mint chocolate drink from the summer), a Bamboo made with Chinese yellow wine, a frozen Bee’s Knees with longan honey and a Gimlet. One early visitor liked every twist they tried. Another found the Grasshopper cloyingly sweet.

Bartenders
Friendly, and happy to go off-menu
10 posts talk about the bartenders
Most of what people say is fond. On a night out at four bars, one visitor found Shifter’s bartenders the most likeable. When a pear drink came out too sweet for another, the bartender swapped it. A bartender warned one visitor that the drink made with ganba, a Yunnan mushroom, was an odd one, and it became that visitor’s nightcap. Several people asked for something off the menu, sour and strong, or gin with a hint of pomegranate, and loved what came back.
The one sharp account is from October 2026. Sitting at the bar, a visitor watched seven or eight drinks being built at once, saw five glasses of the same sweet potato drink end up at five different levels, and saw spilled spirit go unreplaced.
“Really consistent. Nothing misfires.”

Service
Warm, until it gets busy
16 posts talk about service. 11 kind, 5 critical
The kind posts are specific. Staff top up water fast, rearrange seats to fit people in, hold a booked table until the time you ask for, and bring more free snacks before you ask. One visitor was given a fridge magnet, another a bag of tea after being turned away without a booking.
The critical ones are mostly about pace. On a weekday in July 2026 one visitor waited 90 minutes for a seat and 40 more for drinks, and a dish was forgotten. Staff apologised with two bottles of the welcome drink. In October another found drinks slow even when the bar was nearly empty. The harshest post, from November 2025, says that when the staff asked for feedback at the end of the night, they argued with every point the visitor made about the menu.
“She brought more snacks before we even asked.”

Food
Proper food, until about 10pm
21 of 76 posts write about the food
People rate the kitchen well above usual bar snacks. The boneless chicken wings stuffed with pork and preserved mustard greens get three raves out of three. So does a cold tomato jelly salad, which has gone by several names, and two of those groups ordered a second plate. The eel sandwich, hummus, sea urchin dumplings, chicken liver mousse and fried radish sticks all have fans. The confit duck leg splits opinion, and one visitor found it tasted frozen.
Last food orders are around 10pm to 10.30pm, two visitors say. After that there are only snacks. Free snacks get topped up, sometimes before you ask.
“Juicy, fragrant and not greasy.”

The room
A calm room with a gallery at the back
32 posts describe the room. 17 mention the exhibitions
Visitors describe a relaxed room, quiet enough to talk, with semi-private booths for two, a long table by the window that suits someone on their own, and sofas in the corners. One felt at ease the moment they walked in.
At the back is shifter silo, a small free exhibition space. Each season it hosts a show about one ingredient, rice in spring 2026, then mint, then watermelon, with a booklet to take away and drinks to match. 17 posts mention it. Five mention Martini, the bar’s Shiba Inu, who greets new arrivals and watches people eat. One visitor’s friend brought a cat. One visitor noticed how young the crowd was.
“Not many bars can make you relax the moment you walk in.”

Seats and crowds
Easy at 3pm, hard at 9pm
32 posts talk about getting in
Shifter opens at 2pm, and afternoons are the easy time. One group had the whole bar to themselves on a Monday afternoon.
Evenings are another story. Ten posts say plainly that you need a booking, and one visitor who walked in was told the bar only took bookings that night. Reported waits run long: one to two hours, 90 minutes on a weekday, an hour at 8.30pm on a weekday, six or seven groups ahead at 10pm on a weeknight, and a Saturday phone queue that started at 8pm and ended with drinks at 11pm. You can book by phone. One visitor says two or three days ahead was enough, another that the bar holds the table until the time you give. In November 2025 one visitor booked a week ahead and paid a ¥100 deposit, lost if you don’t turn up.
There are exceptions. One visitor walked in at 6.30pm in December and found plenty of seats, and a solo traveller got a same-day place.
“Phoned to queue at eight, drinking by eleven.”

Price
Around ¥100 a drink
7 posts mention price
The prices people quote are ¥98 for the mint chocolate drink (September 2026), ¥108 a cocktail (November 2025) and ¥120 for a gin highball on gin night (July 2026). Two people spent close to ¥800 on an evening of drinks and food and felt it was worth it. One visitor calls the prices normal for this kind of bar, another found the pours a little small.

Toilets
Clean, with a few thoughtful touches
2 posts mention the toilets
One visitor found the toilet clean and stocked with sanitary pads. Another noticed that even the toilet was decorated for the seasonal theme.

How people hear about it
The afternoon bar, and a Jinbao Street stop
21 posts say how they came
Four visitors found Shifter by searching for a cocktail bar open in the afternoon, before a concert or after a hospital appointment. Seven came as part of a night on Jinbao Street with Bar Long Fong, Marzaka or Loma, and one of them could not get in. Four had the bar saved for months before they finally went. One has been coming since 2019, and one booked a table the day they landed in Beijing.
“I found it looking for a bar that opens at 2pm.”

Complaints
Slow nights and gentle drinks
5 negative posts, 7 mixed
The five negative posts split between service and drinks. One is the feedback argument from November 2025. One is the ¥120 gin highball. One found the watermelon drinks flat. One is the October 2026 visitor who watched drinks being batched carelessly and was told, after saying the drink was too sweet, that a sour one would not have been better. The last, also from October, found the drinks thin or cloying and slow to arrive, and liked only the sweet potato drink and the sea urchin dumplings.
The mixed posts mostly pair good drinks or food with a long wait or slow service. Others pair great wings with drinks that missed, or a fun night with drinks that felt too light.
“Five of the same drink, five different fill lines.”

We searched Xiaohongshu, China’s main lifestyle and review app, for every post about Shifter we could find. We set aside posts by the bar, by media and partner groups, posts about guest-bartender nights, list posts that only name the bar, posts mainly about another bar and posts with no text, which left 76 by visitors. We read each one in full ourselves to make the counts. Most posts date from 2026, and the menu changed on 8 October 2026, so many of the drinks people review are no longer on it. The summaries and translated quotes are ours, and the links go to the original posts. Our counts only cover Xiaohongshu. Last checked 2026-10-20.
